Leaving Pacifiers Behind

Pacifiers are a helpful comforting, self-soothing and anxiety reducing tool. The Mayo Clinic actually supports that pacifiers can be helpful in calming babies while parents are otherwise occupied—such as while shopping or driving.

As your little one gets older, thinking about the ‘binky-break-up’ can often feel like, well, a messy break up, instead of an important developmental milestone. With this being said, weaning a pacifier often takes less time than anyone might think—with consistency, research-backed tips, and maybe a few distractions it can be a quick and easy transition.

Here at Lily Pad Childcare we understand that constancy matters, and we are happy to partner with your family as you navigate the different stages of early childhood—from infancy, toddlerhood, pacifier weaning and beyond!

When Is the Right Time to Wean?

Many pediatricians and childcare professionals concur that pacifier weaning should start between 6 months and 2 years of age. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, prolonged pacifier use can lead to misaligned teeth and bite problems if it continues past age 3. While that may sound like an earlier timeframe than you were anticipating, beginning the weaning process earlier will often help weaning be less of an ordeal as well as support language development and self-regulation.

Gentle Weaning Tools

Weaning doesn’t necessarily mean throwing all the pacifiers in the trash and quitting cold-turkey! Here are some fun and research-backed strategies to help you and your child break the binky habit.

> Start Slow

A simple way to begin would be by reserving pacifiers for naps and bedtime only. This is helpful especially within child and daycare settings in that it encourages language usage and expression between children as they play, have conflict, and learn to assert their feelings. We are happy to help here at Lily Pad Childcare . Let us know when and how you plan to wean your child and we are happy to keep to the program.

> The “Binky Fairy”

Similar to the Tooth Fairy, the Binky Fairy will visit and exchange pacifiers for a small toy or stuffed animal. This gives the transition a magical feel and whatever new toy comes in can also act as a nice distraction to keep your little one’s mind off their foregone paci.

> Read Books

Children’s books like “Bye-Bye Binky” or “Pacifiers Are Not Forever” can help normalize and set the tone for the transition, as well as open up conversations with your child about growing up.

We have plenty of books and resources here at Lily Pad Childcare and we would love to share and help in any way we can. Schedule a tour today and chat with our early childhood education professionals about their tried-and-true recommendations!

Letting Go to Grow

Pacifier weaning is one of those “little-big” milestones within early childhood. Zero to Three, a nonprofit focused on infant and toddler development, asserts that consistency, patience, and emotional support are the biggest predictors of a smooth transition. Let’s be honest—some tears and fuss will come as part of this process, but they don’t need to be the whole part. Hang in there, stay consistent, and remember that while it might feel tough in the moment, you’re helping you little one take a step towards independence and stronger communication skills. Remember, you, and your toddler, can do this!

Here at Lily Pad Childcare we know that learning and growth go way beyond simply reciting ABC’s and being able to write your own name. We are here to support our students in their growth and development as a whole and would love to have your family join us.
